May 8-10, 2010: Gator-by-the-Bay Festival, San Diego www.gatorbythebay.com The organizers get a special rate for us at the adjacent Sheraton Hotel. The festival site and hotel are just across the highway from the airport.

Gator-by-the-Bay was a roaring success. In my humble opinion, it was the best year yet, and also one of the best festivals in the country. Peter Oliver did a great job of organization, and Penny Johnsen, Greg Benusa and others aided in the effort. The music/bands were great, the dancers awesome, the food very good, and the weather balmy. I plan to be there next year.

June 9-13, 2011: Strawberry Park, CT Blast From The Bayou http://www.strawberrypark.net/cajun-zydeco-festival/

Strawberry Park Cajun-Zydeco Festival, June 10-13, had it's highs and lows this year. The somber occasion was when an 84y/o gentleman had a heart attack and died on the dance floor Saturday afternoon. The weather was cool, gray and rainy every day. Saturday evening, the rain came down in torrents. Most dancing was under the tent at the rec. center--extremely crowded. This year's crowd was larger than I ever recall. Even the Thursday evening opening dances were crowded. The bands were all very good all weekend--Lil' Anne & Hot Cayenne, Jesse Lege, Dennis Stroughmatt, Jimmy Jo & Jambol, The Derailers, Chris Ardoin, Steve Riley, Donna The Buffalo, Brian Jack, The Pine Leaf Boys, Geno Delafose, & Girl Howdy country band. Despite the weather, this festival gets better every year. I know I'll be back next year. Already have my room reserved at the Purple Cow!

Sept. 3-5, 2010: Rhythm and Roots Festival, Ninigret, RI: Labor Day (Fri-Sat-Sun) www.rhythmandroots.com

Bed & Breakfast Referrals (from Bed and Breakfast Referrals of South Coast Rhode Island)

There are two huge dance floors, and dancers galore of both sexes! Dancing goes til midnight all three days. If considering attending, I have booked rooms at a B and B five short miles away. Contact me dickbrainard@gmail.com if you want more info. Best airport is Providence, 45 miles away. Rental cars are cheaper there also. If a group goes, you can share the car.

Rhythm and Roots Festival in RI over Labor Day weekend was great--probably the best it has ever been. There was non-stop zydeco music on one of the two stages at all times, plus Cajun and swing.
